Research Reassigned Time (RRT) Program For AY24-25

Eligibility

• ZSB applicants must meet the eligibility standards set forth in the General Call for Proposals. However, endowed chairs, distinguished professors, Field Center fellows, or faculty with 18 credits of administrative reassigned time (e.g., chairs, EOs, ADs) are not eligible.
• ZSB faculty must be research active. Faculty are deemed research active if they are designated Scholarly Academic (SA) according to the faculty qualification standards evaluated by the ZSB Executive Committee. There are two paths to maintaining SA status at Zicklin.

Alternative #1: The publication of no less than two refereed scholarly journal articles, related to the theory of business and management, in the most recent five-year period. A refereed or peer‐reviewed scholarly article may be considered published under this policy if it has been formally accepted for publication prior to the end of the final year under review and the article is scheduled to be published within the next calendar year.

Alternative #2: The publication of one refereed journal article related to the theory of business and management, in addition to three additional scholarly publications found in Category A and/or scholarly activities found in Category B within the same five-year period.

• Category A: Scholarly Publications includes: (1) Refereed articles in scholarly journals related to the theory of business, management, and law. (2) First editions of scholarly books published at prominent scholarly presses. (3) Refereed articles related to business education or pedagogy. (4) Case studies published as part of a recognized case study series. (5) Chapters of original material in scholarly books published by prominent scholarly presses.
• Category B: Significant Scholarly Activities includes: (1) Service as the editor‐in‐chief of a major scholarly journal within one’s field. (2) Service in the primary leadership position of a well‐recognized academic society or scholarly association. (3) The presentation of an original scholarly paper at a nationally recognized conference within one’s field. (4) Invited talk or keynote speech.

Process

The Zicklin Executive Committee will screen the proposals to ensure faculty who have applied are SA before being considered.

To evaluate the proposals, the ZSB Executive Committee (ZEC) will use similar criteria to those used for Zicklin’s Summer Research Funding. Applications will be prioritized/ranked by the number of publications in the last three years (2021, 2022, 2023) in top-ranked journals, as defined for purposes of promotion and tenure by the Zicklin School and each department. These include all the journals listed in the UT-Dallas and FT-50 journal rankings and any other journals that each department has designated as “A” in its departmental guidelines. From that prioritized short list of faculty, the ZEC will decide on which faculty should be awarded RRT based on a variety of criteria, including, but not limited to:

1. strength of proposal submitted by the faculty member
2. strength of work-in-progress pipeline
3. recent access to teaching relief (e.g., recent fellowship leave, recent CBA release time)

Depending on the proposals submitted and budget availability, the Zicklin School may fund a limited number of additional RRT to what the Provost’s office is providing.

With this call for applications, WSAS announces its plan to competitively award “Research Reassigned Time” (RRT) in the amount of 3 units/credits to be used in the 2024-2025 academic year. The number of awards made is contingent on available funding provided by the WSAS Dean’s Office and the College Provost’s Office. Active research is fundamental to the School’s mission of providing a transformational undergraduate and graduate experience and the advancement of knowledge. Eligibility:

• All applicants must meet the standards laid out in the College Guidelines above.
• Faculty must be demonstrably research active. This means that faculty must have published/produced at least one shorter scholarly or artistic work since 2021 (inclusive) or one longer scholarly or artistic work since 2019 (inclusive). Works under review (including revise and resubmit) and works in contract, or in production, on or after 2023, will be considered.
  • Shorter works take the form of articles, book chapters, essays, poems, smaller artistic projects; all productions may be solo- or group-authored or produced.
  • Longer works include a book-length publication (edited or co-edited), long scholarly journal article or chapter (50 pages or longer excluding bibliography and foot/endnotes), and/or a significant exhibition/performance that reflects a multi-year time investment; all productions may be solo- or group authored or produced.
• Faculty must utilize the RRT for active research activities intended to generate new knowledge, insights, or artistic expression;
• Research activities: data collection; data analysis; preparing manuscripts/performances/installations for publication/staging; exhibition and digital projects; conducting research.
• Preparing book proposals, indexing, editing of proofs, grant proposals ($250K or higher).
• Please remember that conference attendance and travel funds are awarded separately from RRT; applications for conference and travel funds will be denied.

Process:

All submissions will be reviewed by the WSAS P&B RRT Sub-Committee in two stages.

• Stage 1: Review every application to ensure that guidelines and eligibility requirements are met and that all necessary materials have been submitted.
• Stage 2: This review stage will determine which applicants receive RRT awards. Should the number of eligible applications exceed available funds, the committee will base its decisions on the prospective research activity and the applicant’s past productivity.

Applications advancing a diverse array of scholarly and artistic activity, including public-facing projects, grant activity, less formal scholarly activities, and other forms of production that meet intellectual, disciplinary, and professional goals, will be considered.

Eligibility:

• Faculty must be “research active” according to the definition below.

Marxe school faculty conduct research in many disciplines and applied fields. Standards for publication vary a great deal across those disciplines and fields in terms of the entities produced, the amount of work and time that goes into a single item (e.g., journal article), the numbers of co-authors, and conventions for order of co-authors. The Marxe School is committed to accurately evaluating faculty according to the appropriate standards of their discipline(s) and emphasizing quality and relevance. As such, in defining faculty as “research active”, we favor quality and relevance to public policy, public administration, public management, international affairs, higher education, and related applied fields over rigid quantitative standards.

For reasons of practicality, however, it is important to have comparatively simple guidelines to use as the starting point for research active determination. Faculty can offer evidence in support of their being research active along two lines: product or process, within disciplinary contexts. We provide details for each below. If a faculty member feels these standards are inappropriate, they must make that case.

Research-active faculty in the Marxe School are, in general, those who demonstrate evidence of the following:

1. An article published in a reputable (within disciplinary context) peer-reviewed journal within the previous two years, or
2. A book that has appeared in print, or has final acceptance from a reputable publisher (within disciplinary context) within the previous five years, or
3. An external (to CUNY) grant proposal that has been funded within the past two years, or
4. A major unfunded research proposal within the past two years, or
5. Outstanding research contributions (or analyses) in public or international affairs.

In the absence of evidence of the above, faculty must demonstrate evidence of:

1. A revise-and-resubmit request for an article, an article submitted for review, or other evidence of progress towards submission within the current or previous year.
2. Evidence of progress toward book completion, or a book contract based on proposal/outline within the current or previous year.
3. Internally-funded research proposals (with the exception of PSC-CUNY), or other unfunded proposals.

We anticipate exceptions to these general guidelines for product or process, subject to the governance of the Marxe School research committee.
