Brightspace Learning Management System (LMS) Transition

As of Summer 2024, all Baruch College courses use D2L’s Brightspace as our official learning management system (LMS). Brightspace is a modern and mobile-friendly platform that will better support teaching and learning across multiple modalities and will help our students succeed.

Resources and Support

As the Fall 2024 semester approaches, there are a variety of resources available.

  • Brightspace offers 24/7 support. You can call D2L’s dedicated CUNY phone number: 1-888-895-2511. You can also initiate support on any page in Brightspace by clicking the blue and white dialogue box in the bottom right corner. Note: faculty must identify their school as CUNY. (It is a CUNY contract with Brightspace, so saying Baruch slows down the support agent.) Please provide your CUNYfirst login email when prompted (firstname.lastname##@login.cuny.edu).
  • For internal support, please email brightspace@baruch.cuny.edu. This resource account is overseen by colleagues from the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Digital Learning Hub, BCTC, and the Baruch Brightspace Transition Team.
  • Open a Brightspace LMS Support Ticket in ServiceNow.
  • Join the Baruch’s Transition Team for office hours Tuesdays from 1–2 pm in the Information and Technology Building, Room 655, or join Fridays from 1-2 pm via Zoom.
  • Visit the CUNY Brightspace page for additional resources.

FAQs

Transition Timeline

When does Baruch’s Brightspace transition begin?

Baruch is officially in Wave 2 of four transition waves. The first courses will be instructed in Brightspace in Summer 2024.

Course Content Migration

How will course content be brought over from Blackboard to Brightspace?

D2L is assisting with the content transfer. An AI program will look at the way content was set up in Blackboard and will help with a first pass to organize content in Brightspace. Staff will be holding open office hours and training to assist faculty with organizing content transferred into Brightspace.

How much course content will be transferred into Brightspace?

In total, two years’ worth of content will be automatically transferred from Blackboard into Brightspace. D2L has already loaded duplicates of Baruch Blackboard course sites for Fall 2022, Spring 2023, Summer 2023, and Fall 2023. Over the next several months, duplicate course sites will be created for courses dating back to Spring 2020.

D2L is currently loading duplicates of Spring 2024 Blackboard courses into Brightspace. This process may take a few weeks. If you are missing any courses, please alert the transition team via email at brightspace@baruch.cuny.edu.

Are Blackboard organization sites being migrated to Brightspace?

For faculty who need immediate access to duplicate Blackboard content or courses from before Spring 2020, please complete the Course Migration Request form. Organization sites, or non-academic sites, will not be duplicated into Brightspace until the completion of academic course migrations. If you intend to use your organization site in the summer or fall of 2024, you should request that your organization site be manually migrated.

Other Questions

Are faculty required to use Brightspace?

Effective Fall 2024, CUNY has implemented a policy that states all courses that are synchronous or asynchronously online must have a Brightspace course space available to students. Beyond that, faculty are not required to use Brightspace, but it is strongly recommended. Brightspace is an accessible platform and as the official LMS for CUNY, Brightspace is where students will look for course content. Having all courses in Brightspace helps support student success.

Who owns the content put in Brightspace?

If a faculty member elects to post content in Brightspace, the intellectual property (IP) of the content remains with the faculty member as described under the CUNY Intellectual Property Policy. D2L Brightspace and its hosting platform Amazon Web Services (AWS) also have privacy policies. Neither are permitted to share or reuse content.

Who else uses Brightspace?

Hundreds of schools across the U.S. use Brightspace. To name a few: New York University (NYU), SUNY (the entire system), Purdue University, Georgia State University System, and the Minnesota State University System.

Brightspace Basics

How do I make my course active (visible) to students?
