From:  John Brenkman, Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dear Members of the Faculty,

It gives me great pleasure to invite you to this year’s Convocation ceremony as we begin the new academic year 2012-2013.

Freshman Convocation will begin this year at 9:00 AM in Mason Hall on Thursday August 23rd and will feature remarks by President Wallerstein, Interim Provost Brenkman, Vice President Corpus, the incoming Student Government President, as well as a keynote address by Belinda McKeon, whose debut novel, Solace, was published in 2011 by Scribner (US) and Picador (UK/Ireland/Australia). It was named the Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book of the Year 2011 at the Irish Book Awards and a Kirkus Outstanding Debut of 2011; moreover, Ms. McKeon won the Sunday Independent Best Newcomer award. Her keynote address will be based on this year’s freshman text, Brooklyn by Colm Toibin. The ceremony will conclude with a rousing sing-along of the Baruch Alma Mater, led by Baruch Chorus Director Teresa Parker.

Immediately following Convocation, students take part in the Baruch Beginnings full day of opening festivities including small group discussions of Brooklyn.  The day ends with a barbecue and Block Party on 25th Street.  Parents and families of incoming freshmen will attend a Parent Orientation and Reception.  We invite Baruch faculty and staff to meet and greet parents and families at the Reception scheduled from 6:30 PM until 8 PM in NVC 14-220.

I hope to welcome many of you back on August 23rd. If you plan to attend the Freshman Convocation or the Reception for Parents and Families, please RSVP by logging onto:

Please note: Because of space constraints in Mason Hall, we ask that members of the faculty who plan to attend Convocation be robed and seated with the platform party so that the entire freshman class can be seated in Mason Hall.  If you wish to attend Convocation but do not wish to be seated on stage, you will be directed to 4-North to view the Convocation via simulcast on the large screen.
