Two Items of Note for CUNY Faculty

1. The University Faculty Senate’s Fall 2017 Conference, Innovations and Disruptions in American Higher Education: Views from the Professoriate, will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2017 from 9:00 – 11:00am at the Graduate Center.

From the website:
“This UFS conference engages perennial and temporal themes in American higher education: curriculum development and modifications, the fiscal administration and organization of higher education, and the vicissitudes associated with doctoral education and research.

Panelists will examine how these and other trends will affect the current and future professoriate in terms of their research, teaching and service in an increasingly diverse workplace.”

2. Proposals for Research in the Classroom Idea Grants are due November 10, 2017.  This program funds innovative ideas for incorporating authentic research projects into the undergraduate curriculum.

Faculty often view research and teaching as two distinct scholarly endeavors.  And yet, there is compelling evidence that incorporating authentic research activities into classroom teaching benefits both students and faculty. While the apprentice model for mentored student research is still a gold standard, participation in undergraduate research can be effectively expanded using curriculum-based methods.  The Research in the Classroom initiative is part of the new strategic framework for CUNY and represents one method for increasing experiential learning.
