With the new CUNY Master Plan in development, we expect that “internationalization at home” initiatives will be an important part of CUNY’s global strategy. One such initiative that may have promise to reach a substantial number of CUNY students by globalizing the on-campus curriculum is COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning), which “[refers] to any pedagogical activities that use technology to link classrooms and students in geographically distant locations through coursework. Among the other terms used to describe such activity are virtual exchange, virtual mobility, globally networked learning, telecollaboration, and online intercultural exchange.” (from the SUNY COIL website)
In order to explore the potential of this approach, CUNY has decided to serve as host and lead sponsor of this year’s SUNY COIL conference, which will take place at The Graduate Center on April 25-26, 2016. CUNY employees will receive the same reduced rate as SUNY. To receive the rate, registrants should indicate “CUNY” when asked during the registration process. The registration portal and call for presentations is now open. Since this conference typically sells out, early registration is highly recommended. If your faculty or staff are not able to register, please notify coil@cuny.edu, and we will do our best to negotiate some additional spots. However, we can’t make guarantees, so again, early registration is highly recommended.
Beyond supporting the participation of your faculty and staff in this conference, you can also promote COIL development on your campus by circulating this survey. As next steps are considered, these survey results will help the EVC for Academic Affairs assess the potential for COIL development at each campus and at CUNY as a whole, so broad participation is encouraged. Interested faculty and staff are also encouraged to join the COIL Academic Commons group, and may send a request to coil@cuny.edu to be added to the COIL listserv
Thank you,
Lucinda
