The Conversation Partners Program
Faculty Lunch Seminar, Thursday, October 22, 12:45pm, Room NVC 6-210
From: Esther Allen, Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Literature
Baruch's Conversation Partner's Program, founded by Profs. Ron Aaron and Elisabeth Gareis, matches native and nonnative speakers of English for informal conversations. This gives nonnative students added confidence in conversational English, native speakers experience in communicating across language barriers, and both nonnative and native students increased cultural awareness, a sense of community, and the potential of friendships and networks across cultural lines. The initiative sprang from Prof. Aaron’s interactions with nonnative students and the recognized need for greater comfort in conversing as well as from Prof. Gareis’ research (covered in the Chronicle of Higher Education) on the struggle of many foreign students to integrate in U.S. classrooms and college environments. Prof. Aaron, Prof. Gareis, and student coordinators Randell Gaskins, Radhiyah Kaiyum, and Kevin Lam will discuss the program and how it fosters civic engagement and carries forward an ongoing research project.
Lunch will be served and seating is limited so please RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org.
