From: Dave Christy, Provost

Dear Members of Baruch College Faculty,

Please join me on August 24 to welcome an enthusiastic class of new students to Baruch College and to open the 2017-2018 academic year.  There are two opportunities to participate: Freshman Convocation and the Reception for Parents and Families.

Freshman Convocation in Mason Hall

Faculty are essential participants in the Freshman Convocation, which will begin this year on Thursday, August 24 at 10:00am in Mason Hall on the first floor of the 17 Lexington Avenue Building; continental breakfast and robing begin at 9:00am in room 306 of 17 Lex.  I will welcome and introduce President Mitchel Wallerstein, Vice President and Dean of Students Art King, and incoming Student Government President Isabel Arias.  The keynote address will be centered on this year’s freshman text, The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henriquez, a compelling story that explores the American dream and the immigrant experience.  As is our tradition, the ceremony will conclude with a rousing sing-along of the Baruch Alma Mater, led by Baruch Chorus Director Professor Teresa Parker.

The faculty attend Convocation in regalia and sit on the stage as a group.  If you choose to join the platform party at Freshman Convocation or will attend the Reception for Parents and Families, please RSVP by logging onto:  Once on that site, you will be asked whether you will need a robe for the Convocation (and, if so, you will be asked for size details.)  DEADLINE FOR REGALIA: July 18. Please do this today!

Immediately following Convocation, students take part in Baruch Beginnings, a day of opening festivities including small group discussions of The Book of Unknown Americans.  The student events conclude with a club and involvement fair within the NVC.  If you choose to read this year’s freshman text, we would welcome your participation in one of the discussion groups.  Please contact Deanne Decrescenzo to arrange to join a discussion group. Reception for Parents and Families:

Parents and families of incoming freshmen will attend a Parent & Family Orientation followed by a Reception.  Parent Orientation will begin at 5:30pm at the Newman Vertical Campus 5-150.  The parents will then be directed to the fourteenth floor for a reception that will begin shortly after 6:30pm.  We invite Baruch faculty and staff to meet and greet parents and families at the Reception; please go directly to the fourteenth floor and introduce yourselves to parents and students.  Once again, please RSVP at

I hope to welcome many of you at one of these two events for new students and families on August 24.

Please note: Because of space constraints in Mason Hall, we are asking that faculty who plan to attend Convocation be robed and seated with the platform party so that the entire freshman class can be seated in Mason Hall.  Once again this year, we have a very large freshman class!
