 Ethics Week 2012

March 26-31

 

During Ethics Week, members of the Baruch faculty are encouraged to initiate discussions in their classrooms of ethical issues related to their subjects or disciplines. Special events featuring members of the Baruch community and invited guests also are scheduled. Following is the schedule of those special events for Ethics Week 2012.

 

1.   Prologue to Ethics Week - Thursday, March 15, 12:15-1:45, NVC 14-267

      Research Ethics Forum (as previously announced)

      Panelists:  Profs. Helaine Korn, Joel Lefkowitz, Hannah Rothstein

      Moderator:  Prof. Donald Vredenburgh

As a profession, academe must uphold ethical standards, including research standards if the development and dissemination of knowledge are to thrive. Recent instances of egregiously unethical research practices have harmed the credibility of the academic research enterprise, and ample incentives and opportunities for fraud and other deception suggest a need for continuing awareness and vigilance. The participants in this forum will discuss conflicts of interest, plagiarism, treatment of human participants, data control, post hoc hypotheses, journal practices, and other issues.

Abraham J. Briloff Prizes in Ethics
The faculty and student winners of the Briloff Prizes will be announced as part of the college’s Tenth Annual Faculty Recognition Ceremony, which will begin at 4pm.

- Refreshments will be available.

 

3.  Tuesday, March 27, 12:45-2:30pm, 151 E. 25^th Street (Newman Library Building), Room 750

      The Story of an Exposed Inside Trader

In December 2011, Garrett Bauer pleaded guilty to insider trading, obstruction of justice and money laundering. His crimes spanned 17 years and brought in $37 million. Mr. Bauer now awaits sentencing for his actions. He will explain what constitutes insider trading, how he became involved, and the scheme itself. Mr. Bauer will be joined by Walter Pavlo Jr., who oversaw a $2 billion operation at MCI Communications before being caught embezzling $6 million. Mr. Pavlo is author of Stolen Without A Gun: Confessions From Inside History's Biggest Accounting Fraud - the Collapse of MCI/WorldCom and blogger for Forbes on white collar crime. He will provide the audience context for the recent spate of insider trading cases.

Teaching Ethics: How to Start Ethics Discussions and How Not to Snuff Them Out by Accident 

Prof. Douglas Lackey (Philosophy) will host an informal discussion with faculty colleagues on the subject of leading classroom discussions of ethics. Interested colleagues should contact Prof. Lackey: 646 312-4370 or Douglas.Lackey@baruch.cuny.edu.

      A Conversation with Randy Cohen

Randy Cohen, author of “The Ethicist” column of the New York Times Magazine from 1999-2011, and currently host of the Public Radio program “Person Place Thing,” will discuss his role as a public ethicist. This event is sponsored by the Baruch College Honors Program and the Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute.
