Paul A. Feit Memorial Lecture Series Presents:

Barbara Weinstein, Chair and Silver Professor of History at New York University

The Color of Modernity: São Paulo and the Making of Race and Nation in Brazil

Tuesday, September 29

12:30 - 2:30 pm

NVC 5-165

Presenting her newly-published book, Professor Weinstein examines the creation of regional identity in the São Paulo region of Brazil. Considered Brazil’s most-developed region, São Paulo increasingly associated its material progress with “whiteness” in opposition to other areas of Brazil. Weinstein examines the roots of this phenomenon and how it has affected long-term processes of development and democratization in Brazil.
