Spring 2018 OER Initiative Seminar  

Building on the success of the CTL’s current OER Initiative, part of a grant-funded CUNY-wide effort to support Open Educational Resources (OER) and zero textbook cost courses, this spring we will be offering a semester-long seminar to help faculty learn about, develop, and potentially adopt OER and zero cost course materials.

Faculty who participate in all sessions will receive $300 in compensation, and those who complete the seminar and adapt a course to meet the zero textbook cost designation in CUNYFirst for summer and/or fall 2018 will be eligible for an additional $700 for a total of $1000.* (Faculty who adapt a course outside of this timeline may be eligible for compensation at a later date.) Full and part time faculty, as well as Graduate Teaching Fellows, from all disciplines are welcome. Fill out our form HERE to get on our mailing list to participate.

Session I: What are OER?

2-hour session; week of February 5

In this session we will introduce attendees to and differentiate between OER and zero cost materials. We will focus on OER specifically as an opportunity to revisit pedagogical approaches, raise student information literacy, introduce a wider variety of course materials, and embrace interdisciplinarity. Prior to this session, we encourage faculty to consider which course, or courses, they would be interested in converting to OER.

Session topics include:

  • Copyright issues and open licensing
  • Remixable content
  • Textbook networks such as OpenStax and the UMN Open Textbook Library
  • Thinking beyond just textbooks to OER as any number of different course materials

Session: II: Why OER?

2-hour session; week of March 5

In session two we will discuss the pedagogical value of using OER instead of textbooks, and also how the openness of OER creates a different relationship to education than zero cost.  Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about other faculty’s experience of the OER conversion process. We will also raise the issues of student access and usability questions when thinking about OER pedagogy. Prior to this session we encourage faculty to think about elements of their existing syllabi that could be converted to OER.

Session topics include:

  • What are textbooks for and why do we rely on them?
  • The pedagogical advantages of using OER
  • Why choose true OER over zero cost materials?
  • Mobile/Digital friendly materials vs. traditional paper-based materials

Session III: OER How-to

1-hr one-on-one meeting; March or April, by appointment

In these one-on-one sessions, faculty will get personalized, hands-on help with OER strategies and tools. The goal is to equip each participant the skills to develop OER materials and convert their course to zero textbook cost. Prior to meeting with an OER fellow, faculty are encouraged to think about, gather, and/or begin to develop OER/zero cost materials, and to consider which platform they might want to use for any digital course materials.

Session topics will be individualized based on faculty needs

Session IV: Spring OER Showcase

2-hr session; week of April 30

In the final session, we will hear from faculty in the OER Initiative who implemented their OER and zero cost materials during the spring 2018 semester. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak to and ask questions of participating faculty members in an informal, collegial setting.

Wednesday, 12/6, from 11am-12:30pm in NVC 14 -275

At this informal gathering, faculty who participated in the OER Initiative this fall will be speaking about their processes as they planned and implemented their zero textbook cost courses, and they will also be sharing about particular materials and assignments. Come and get some insight into using OER/zero cost materials, get to know other faculty who are participating in the OER Initiative, and enjoy some light refreshments!

* Please note that the amount and timing of all compensation is contingent upon the status of the workload report. Total amount of compensation, and timing of the payment might need to be adjusted to be compliant with workload rules.
