The college thrives when its faculty members are active participants in the college community, engaging with colleagues, staff and students both inside and outside of class hours.  At Baruch, our faculty maintain a commitment to high quality teaching, scholarship, and service, including shared governance. 

One possible outcome of our interest in enhancing student learning through experimentation and adoption of some on-line delivery of instruction is that it could have the unintended result of reducing our commitment to one another, and distancing ourselves from our students when technology is not carefully applied.  We want to mitigate these unintended consequences, and include them in our policies regarding how we study and work together.  

In order to promote a fully engaged professoriate, the college expects all full-time faculty members who are not on sabbatical or other leave to teach a minimum of one course on campus, including the CUNY Graduate Center, during both the fall and spring semesters.  Your availability on our campus is essential for student mentoring and instructional support, faculty decision making including issues regarding curriculum, appointments, promotion and tenure, program development, and your participation in the intellectual life of our academic community. 

Exceptions to the policy must be approved in sequence by your Department Chair, School Dean, and the Provost in advance of submission of the schedule for the given semester.

Factors that may be considered when a waiver is requested include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • You are untenured and you have a rationale for using a portion of your 24 hours of contractual reassigned time for scholarly purposes requiring release from all teaching during a semester.
  • You have a funded fellowship or grant that requires release from all teaching.
  • You are “working down” an accrued workload balance from a previous semester.
  • The Chair of your Department recommends to the School Dean and Provost that you be released from all teaching to fulfill essential departmental academic program needs.


Provided your justification is convincing, has been approved in advance by your Department Chair, School Dean, and Provost, and is based on your scholarly needs or your department’s academic needs, such exemptions are often granted, especially for junior faculty members who have contractual reassigned time.

Faculty whose teaching assignment includes hybrid or fully on-line courses are expected to be fully engaged with our students and as members of the department.  If there is a plan to be unavailable in person on our campus for a number of weeks, it must be fully disclosed and approved in advance, with a plan to ensure that the impact on students, departmental governance and service, and your commitment to Baruch College are uncompromised.
