From Baruch Seminar to Nationwide Critical Acclaim:

The Harman Writer-in-Residence Program

Welcomes Back Yelena Akhtiorskaya

From: Esther Allen, Department of Modern Languages

You are warmly invited to attend the eighth annual Resonances: Writers on the Classics panel this evening at 6 p.m. in Engelman Recital Hall in the Baruch Performing Arts Center.

As an undergraduate in Harman Writer-in-Residence Francisco Goldman's fall 2005 creative writing seminar, Yelena Akhtiorskaya took first prize in the short story competition. Less than a decade later, her first novel, Panic in a Suitcase, was among the New York Times' 100 Notable Books of 2014.

This panel, free to Baruch students and professors, brings Akhtiorskaya and Goldman back together to be joined by renowned Mexican writers Alvaro Enrigue, author of the recent, highly acclaimed Sudden Death, and Valeria Luiselli, author of the much-discussed The Story of My Teeth, for a conversation about classic works of literature that have had a deep influence on their own writing. Sponsored by Baruch's Great Works and Harman Writer-in-Residence Programs and the PEN World Voices Festival

Esther Allen, Associate Professor, Modern Languages and Comparative Literature
