SVALBARD – Land of Water, Ice, and Rock

Leonard Sussman, Department of Fine and Performing Arts

Tuesday, December 5, NVC 8-210, 12:30–1:30pm

Lunch served

The Svalbard Archipelago is in the extreme north of the Arctic, far above continental Norway and east of Greenland. Only the northmost areas of Greenland, Elsmere Island in Canada, and a few islands in the Russian Arctic are further north. A wild and unforgiving environment, Svalbard’s fragile ecosystem is threatened by global climate change and rising sea levels that in turn threaten its flora and fauna.

Through his photographs, both in print and digital form, Leonard Sussman will present his vision of this harsh yet magical place. Water in its solid, liquid, and vapor forms is ever-present molding and shaping the structure of the archipelago and Sussman’s imagery. His work plays with ambiguities of scale and time in the landscape making the viewer uncertain about the scope of what is presented. Though his choice of subject is guided by aesthetic concerns, the more direct connection comes from his relationship to the specific places he loves. His Svalbard photographs were taken during five recent trips beginning in June 2014 and, most recently, in July 2017.

Professor and Deputy Chair for Art in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, Sussman has photographed for over fifty years and has had numerous individual and group exhibits in the United States and Europe. Selected published works include: Entre Vents, Racines et Rocs Explorations of Mont Ventoux in Provence (2009); Sardinia (2000); and Hills of Home: The Rural Ozarks of Arkansas (1975 - etchings and drawings). Sussman prints all of his own work.

His work is included in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the Istituto Nazionale della Grafica e Fotografia (National Institute of Graphic Design and Photography) in Rome, the Museum of the City of New York, and Citicorp, New York.
