From:  David Christy, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dear Colleagues:

I write to update you on our efforts to identify the new director of Sponsored Programs and Research (SPAR).  We consider this to be a key appointment for the future of the College since the director plays a vital role realizing the ambitious research goals of our faculty.  The new director will assist faculty in identifying and applying for grant opportunities, but that colleague will also promote, foster, and advocate for faculty research.  For example, one of our most recent initiatives was the launch of 4 funded faculty research seminars, all faculty defined, which are intended to bring together Baruch College faculty, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, faculty from neighboring institutions, and visiting scholars in interdisciplinary or disciplinary groups for the purpose of exploring topics of common intellectual and scholarly concern. These seminars are designed to offer opportunities through regularly scheduled meetings for faculty to investigate and develop new areas of research and teaching through sustained intellectual collaboration.  We would like our new SPAR director to sustain and develop other research opportunities of this kind for our faculty, and to identify and foster faculty research synergies.

The search committee for the new Director of SPAR will be chaired by Associate Provost Dennis Slavin and includes: Linda Lemiesz, Chief-of-Staff, Office of the Provost; Professor Stuart Schulman, Department of Management, the Zicklin School of Business; Professors Hector Cordero-Guzman and Deborah Balk, School of Public Affairs; Professors Edyta Greer, Department of Natural Sciences, and Catherine Good, Department of Psychology, the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences.  This stellar group will soon begin actively working to identify the new director of SPAR.

While we work to recruit the new director, I wanted to reassure you that our talented and dedicated SPAR staff will continue to work closely with faculty on identifying, applying for, and administering grants.  I invite you to confer, as appropriate, with Melisa Mendez (, Associate Director, Pre-Award Administration, and  Zolicia Abotsi, Associate Director, Post-Award Administration, (  Until we have identified the new director, both Ms. Mendez and Ms. Abotsi will work closely with Associate Provost Erec R. Koch (, who welcomes your thoughts on effective ways in which we can promote and support faculty research at the College.
