The obituary below appeared in the New York Times on January 31, 2015. As part of his distinguished academic career, Dean Leinwand held faculty and administrative positions at Baruch College/City College from 1963-1977, including Acting Dean of Baruch’s School of Arts and Sciences and Founding Dean of our School of Education.

 

LEINWAND--Dr. Gerald S.

Dean Emeritus of the School of Education at Bernard M. Baruch College/CUNY and President Emeritus of Western Oregon University passed away on Friday, January 30, 2015 at the age of 93. He was born in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, the son of Jacob Louis Leinwand and Rose (Simonoff) Leinwand. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University in 1941, his Masters degree from Columbia University in 1945 and his Doctorate from New York University in 1963. He was an educator who championed public education and believed in the power of education to better peoples' lives. He is the author of over 40 books including The Pageant of World History, a high school textbook in publication for 35 years and in use throughout the United States. His most recent publications include 1927: High Tide of the 1920s, and William Jennings Bryan: an Uncertain Trumpet. His last book, published in 2010, was Intimations of Immortality. Dr. Leinwand was married to Selma Fienberg Leinwand of Bennington, VT for 43 years. In 1989 he married Brenda Rediker (died 1997). For the past 17 years he was the constant companion of Jacqueline Leeds. Beloved father of Roberta Opper and husband, Peter, of Richmond, VA and Adrienne Maslin and husband, David, of West Hartford, CT. Devoted grandfather of Mark Opper and wife, Rachel, and Erica Midboe and husband, Per, and Spencer Maslin. Great grandfather of Devan and Levi Opper, and Per David and Michaela Midboe. Brother of Calvin Leinwand and the late A. David Leinwand. Donations may be made to Temple Emanu-El or your charity of choice.

Service Sunday, February 1 at 11am at Temple Emanu-El, 5th Ave. at 65th Street.
