From: Keri Bertino, Director, Baruch College Writing Center
Dear Members of the Faculty:
Welcome and welcome back to Baruch! The Writing Center is looking forward to another year of working as your partners in supporting our student writers.
We’d like to invite you to one of our two Faculty Open Houses this September. Please come visit the Writing Center, meet our consultants and staff, and learn more about our programming and resources for students and faculty. We’ll hold our open houses on Friday, 9/19 from 1-2pm and Tuesday, 10/7 from 1-2 pm, in Vertical Campus room 8-185.
This email offers information on classroom visits, resources for faculty, and writing workshops. We also introduce walk-in hours at the Newman Library Reference Desk, and new staff specializing in multilingual (ELL/ESL) writing support.
The Writing Center welcomes invitations to visit your classrooms. During a classroom visit, our professional consultants present a 10-15 minute overview that introduces our mission, describes our services, and helps students determine how they can make the best use of the Writing Center’s resources. We also address practical concerns—such as where to find us and how to use our online scheduler to make appointments—and answer any questions about the Writing Center.
To invite us to your classroom, complete the online form at http://writingcenter.baruch.cuny.edu/faculty/classroom-visits. If you’d prefer, you may also download a Classroom Visit Invitation Form and email it to firstname.lastname@example.org, or drop it off at the Writing Center, NVC 8-185.
Many other resources for faculty, including blurbs for your syllabi, are available at the following link: http://writingcenter.baruch.cuny.edu/faculty/
Our fall workshops will begin Monday, September 15th, and include the new workshop, “Interpreting Assignments,” in addition to 14 other workshops on reading, interpretation, argumentation, structure, research, incorporating sources, audience, and revision. A flyer is available for download here.
Also beginning September 15th, we’ll launch a pilot program of 20-minute walk-up sessions at the Newman Library Reference Desk.
We’re excited, too, to announce the addition of three new Multilingual (ELL/ESL) Writing Support Specialists to our staff, who offer expertise in supporting students from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
And as always, please be in touch if you'd like to discuss your students' writing, assignment and rubric design, giving feedback to student writing, or any other matters related to teaching writing. The Writing Center is your partner in teaching our students the reading, writing, research, analysis, and critical thinking skills they'll need to excel—in coursework and their careers.
With best wishes for the new semester,
Director, Baruch College Writing Center
