From:  Dave Christy, Provost

Dear Members of Baruch College Faculty,

Please join me on August 26th  to welcome an enthusiastic class of new students to Baruch College and open the 2015-2016 academic year.  There are two opportunities to participate: Freshman Convocation and Reception for Parents and Families.

Faculty are essential participants in the Freshman Convocation will begin this year on Wednesday, August 26th at 10:00AM in Mason Hall on the first floor of the 17 Lexington Avenue Building.  I will welcome and introduce President Mitchel Wallerstein,  Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students Art King, and incoming Student Government President   Annie Sourbis.  The keynote address will be delivered by Karen Joy Fowler, the author of this year’s freshman text, We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, the winner of the 2014 PEN/Faulkner award for fiction and a nominee for the Man Booker Prize.  Fowler has won numerous awards for her short stories.  Her collections  Black Glass and What I Didn’t See and Other Stories won World Fantasy awards.  Her novel The Jane Austen Book Club was a major best seller and was made into a movie of the same name.  As is our tradition, the ceremony will conclude with a rousing sing-along of the Baruch Alma Mater, led by Baruch Chorus Director Teresa Parker.

Immediately following Convocation, students take part in Baruch Beginnings, a day of opening festivities including small group discussions of We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves.  The student events conclude with a barbecue and Block Party on the 25th Street Plaza.  If you choose to read this year’s freshman text, we would welcome your participation in one of the discussion groups.

Parents and families of incoming freshmen will attend a Parent Orientation, and Reception for Parents and Families.  Parent Orientation will begin at 5:30pm at the Newman Vertical Campus 5-150.  We invite Baruch faculty and staff to meet and greet parents and families at the Reception scheduled from 6:30 PM until 8 PM in NVC 14-220.

I hope to welcome many of you back at one of these two events for new students and families on August 26th.  If you choose to join the platform party at Freshman Convocation or will attend the Reception for Parents and Families, please RSVP by logging onto:  Once on that site, you will be asked whether you will need a robe for the Convocation (and, if so, you will be asked for size information).

Please note: Because of space constraints in Mason Hall, we are asking that faculty who plan to attend Convocation be robed and seated with the platform party so that the entire freshman class can be seated in Mason Hall.  If you wish to attend Convocation but do not wish to join us on stage, you will be directed to 4 North to view the Convocation via simulcast on the large screen.
