From:  Dennis Slavin, Associate Provost for Teaching and Learning

Dear Colleagues,

As announced at the Faculty Senate, Baruch College is moving this spring to online evaluation of courses and instruction: instead of instructors taking time from classes for students to fill out paper forms near the end of the semester, students will be given a window for filling them out online. We piloted our new “SmartEvals” software with the seven-week courses that ended in mid-March and were pleased with the results: with minimal notice and no publicity, the participation rate by students was 59%.

On Monday, May 5 we will send emails to your students asking them to complete online evaluations and providing the necessary link(s). The questions asked and the range of responses will be the same as the ones used at Baruch since 2005. Any responses to the “comments” section will be seen only by you, the course’s instructor—also the case since 2005. (See a PDF of  the 2005 evaluation form here: )

Please urge your students to complete the online evaluations: widespread participation by students will mean more authoritative results (especially in contrast to other online sites) and will allow meaningful comparisons of the results of online administration with previous results on paper.

The evaluations will be available to the students from Monday, May 5 to Friday, May 16 (final exams begin on the 17th). During that period, students who have not completed evaluations will receive emailed reminders.
