From:  Dr. Patricia L. Price, Associate Provost and Assistant Vice President, Academic Administration, Faculty Development & Research

Service as a Faculty Advisor of student research is an important role that you play in student experiential learning, student engagement in authentic research, and graduate student success. Serving as a Faculty Advisor also carries with it responsibilities, particularly when human subjects are involved.

Faculty Advisors are faculty members, research program directors, or adjunct faculty who agree to supervise student or postdoctoral researchers, including research that engages human subjects. Faculty Advisors are active mentors and have primary responsibility for the oversight and ethical conduct of the research and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and CUNY policies. Faculty Advisors are responsible for assisting student researchers with designing and planning research activities appropriate to the student’s level of training and experience. In short, Faculty Advisors are ultimately responsible for the overall management of an approved research protocol, in conjunction with the student. This includes overseeing the preparation of the HRPP/IRB application and ensuring that the research is being conducted in a compliant and ethical manner. Finally, Faculty Advisors must ensure that the research is being conducted in compliance with the approved IRB protocol and any stipulations imposed by the CUNY UI IRB.

For further information regarding Faculty Advisor Responsibilities please view the following video: To assist Faculty Advisors with helping students design and develop their submissions for HRPP/IRB Review, the Baruch HRPP Office has developed additional training videos. The HRPP Training Videos Library can be viewed here:  To access videos off-campus please use your Baruch username/password.
