Professor Nancy Yousef, Department of English
The Typical, the Particular, and the Everyday
NVC 13-155 from 1:00-2:30pm Tuesday, October 6
From: Prof. Timothy Aubry, Department of English
Attending to the everyday was an innovative artistic practice for William Wordsworth and George Eliot, a radical philosophical methodology for Ludwig Wittgenstein, and a matter of ethical urgency for all three writers. Each of their projects can be situated within their respective cultural contexts--Wordsworth’s poetry of “common life” against the transcendental impulses of high romantic lyric; Eliot’s novels of “commonplace people” against sensational tendencies within realism; Wittgenstein’s “common uses” against the demands of logical positivism. This talk will aim to understand the implications of their shared interest in the “ordinary” and the “everyday” in relation to nineteenth century efforts to distinguish aesthetic and scientific modes of knowledge.
