Three Upcoming Events:

 

1. A Pound of Flesh: Jews and the Renaissance

Thursday, October 25, from 3-5pm, Engelman Recital Hall, BPAC

The Jewish Studies Center and the Joel Segall Great Works Reading Series at Baruch Performing Arts Center present “A Pound of Flesh: Jews and the Renaissance.” This event will feature an onstage dialogue with theater director Daniel Sullivan, actor F. Murray Abraham, and author James Shapiro, and include a special video presentation comparing the various film productions of The Merchant of Venice. It will be moderated by Paula Berggren, Department of English.

 

Daniel Sullivan is a Tony Award winning theater and film director who directed the widely acclaimed 2010 Shakespeare in the Park production of The Merchant of Venice starring Al Pacino and Lily Rabe. F. Murray Abraham, actor on both stage and screen, won an Obie Award for Sustained Excellence for Performance in 2011 for his performance as Shylock. Mr. Abraham is also the winner of, among numerous other honors, an Academy Award for his role in “Amadeus”. Professor James Shapiro, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, is the author of, among many other publications, Shakespeare and the Jews.

2. Celebrate Open Access Week

Sponsored by the LACUNY Scholarly Communications Roundtable, the Open Access Publishing Network@CUNY (http://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/oapn/), and the UFS Open Access Advisory Group, these presentations feature faculty members from across CUNY:

 

Morning Session (10am-noon) — How to Go Open Access and How CUNY Can Help

Learn about open access scholarly publishing, authors’ rights, and progress toward a CUNY open access repository.

 

Afternoon Session (2pm-4pm) — Open Access Textbooks and Open Educational Materials

Hear from faculty about how they created and used open access educational materials.

3. Globus Seminar - Gary Victor, Haitian novelist, journalist, politician and film writer

One of the most widely read Haitian writers of our time, Gary Victor will present a seminar on his works as a reflection of Haitian society. Born in Port-au-Prince, he was trained as an agronomer, studying the landscape and mentality of the countryside. From 1976 to1983 he wrote short stories for the journal Nouveau Monde and was a columnist for Le Nouvelliste, publishing hundreds of articles on culture, politics, and society. With his sharp, witty style he portrays typical Haitian characters of everyday life. Mr. Victor worked for the Ministry of Planning, served as Director of the Ministry of Culture (1991) and as Secretary General of the Haitian Republic from 1996-2000.

 

His novels have been published in France, Canada, and Haiti. He also published Chroniques d'un leader haïtien comme il faut (2006). In 2009, he wrote the filmscript for “Les amours d’un zombi” (The loves of a zombi), directed by Haitian film-maker Arnold Antonin, which portrays Haitian society as a mixture of voodoo, political satire, criticism of the media and self-mockery.

Among his literary awards are the Prix RFO du livre (2004) and the Casa de la Americas Prize 2012 for his 2010 novel Le sang et la mer (Blood and the Sea).
