Dr. Meechal Hoffman Appointed Director of the Schwartz Communication Institute

November 18, 2019

I’m pleased to announce that Dr. Meechal Hoffman is now officially Director of the Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute. Before taking on this position as well as serving since March 2019 as Acting Director, Dr. Hoffman was the Institute’s Associate Director from September 2014 – March 2019. She has also previously taught First-year Writing and Great Works of Literature at Baruch.

Dr. Hoffman’s tenure at the Institute has already included many successes, including the development of the Very Short Guides, an essential toolkit that overviews core pedagogical concepts and practices and that is now in its second edition; her Inclusive Pedagogy Seminar, which has supported three cohorts of faculty so far as they diversified syllabi and instructional materials, explored strategies for facilitating difficult class discussions, and reflected on inclusive assessment practices; a stable of other faculty development programming in support of communication-intensive teaching and learning, including Seminars on Case Teaching and Integrating Writing into Management Courses; and resources designed directly for students, including two compilations, one of Model Student Speeches, and one of Model Student Slides, both of which are annotated to guide students toward reflection and growth as communicators across the disciplines.

In her new role, Dr. Hoffman will continue to further the Institute’s mission, cultivating learning environments in which students become strategic, thoughtful communicators and creators. She looks forward to collaborating with many of you as she, together with her team, develops and supports Communication Intensive Courses, guides pedagogical reflection, and fosters the teaching and learning of written, oral, visual, and digital literacies across the College.

Dr. Hoffman received her B.A. (English) from Barnard College, and her Masters and PhD (English) from the CUNY Graduate Center.
