CUNY Immersive Research Experience

The CUNY Immersive Research Experience (CIRE) provides funded research experiences for baccalaureate degree students over a one-year period. The goal of the program is to encourage undergraduate participation in authentic research, to increase persistence in STEM disciplines (including social and behavioral sciences), and to prepare advanced undergraduate students for graduate programs and the professional workforce.

STEM fields include mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, computer and information sciences, and the social and behavioral sciences (psychology, economics, sociology, and political science). Any research with a laboratory component is also eligible.

CIRE aims to equip students with the tools for academic and workforce success, including science literacy and communication, public speaking, resume building, self-confidence, and self-efficacy. A strong commitment to ethical research practices is a crucial component of the program.

Student Application

Eligibility

Full-time rising junior and rising seniors in qualifying STEM programs may participate. Students commit to being part of the program for one full academic year plus the following summer. Students will participate for a minimum of 400 hours during the academic year and summer; students must maintain full-time enrollment status while in the program.

Faculty Award

Faculty mentors will receive $1000 per student mentee to be used for supplies, research materials, or as summer salary. This amount is for the one-year program. Faculty commit to working with the student for each semester and the summer program. Individual faculty members may mentor more than one student, but no more than three students during the one-year program.

Student Award

For their participation in the program, students will receive a $6,000 fellowship disbursed over the fall, spring, and summer.

CIRE will include workshops hosted by participating colleges related to lab safety, responsible conduct in research, and guidance on research (including but not limited to public speaking, abstract writing, poster preparation, and science reading and writing). The program will culminate each year with a program-wide summer symposium in which all selected students are expected to participate.
