Mental Health Support During COVID-19
February 5, 2021
From: Dr. Teresa Hurst, Director, Baruch College Counseling Center
As a follow-up to yesterday’s Faculty Senate meeting, I wanted to share my presentation (attached) on the mental health impact of Covid-19 on our students and what the Counseling Center is offering to address their needs.
Two key points I would like to highlight are:
- When referring students to the Counseling Center, the easiest way for them to make an appointment is to go to our website at https://studentaffairs.baruch.cuny.edu/counseling/ and click on “Make an Appointment.”
- If you are worried about a student and concerned they won’t make an appointment, please complete a Campus Intervention Team (CIT) form at https://studentaffairs.baruch.cuny.edu/campus-intervention-team/, and a CIT case manager will reach out to the student to help connect them to support.
The Counseling Center cannot reach out to students directly, but we work closely with the CIT to ensure the students get the mental health help they need.
I also wanted to share the news that through the CARES ACT funding, CUNY Central has finalized a one year contract with an organization called Crisis Text Line. Students can now text the keyword “CUNY” to 741741 for free, confidential, 24/7 crisis counseling by text. Coming soon through the Cares Act Funding will be “Kognito” training for staff/faculty on handling students in distress AND Talkspace counseling service for students outside of NY State and out of the US. I will let you all know as soon as I hear more about these.
Sincerely,
Teresa
