Director of Adjunct Faculty Services – new position

November 7, 2019

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Linda M. Lemiesz (Ph.D., J.D) is now officially Director of Adjunct Faculty Services at Baruch College. Before taking on this position, Dr. Lemiesz served from January 2014-July 2019 as the Chief of Staff to the Provost, which included a stint as our Acting Associate Provost for Academic Administration from December 2016-June 2017. Since 2014 she has also served as the college’s Research Conflict of Interest Officer, a role that continues going forward.

Soon before he retired last June, Provost Christy assigned Dr. Lemiesz the task of building an infrastructure for Adjunct Faculty Services. She has, in that short time and in an acting role, drafted a mission statement and service goals for this new project. She has also created two orientation brochures for adjunct faculty, “Adjunct Essentials” and “Adjunct Employee” (now under review), posted a website on Blogs at Baruch (https://blogs.baruch.cuny.edu/adjfac/), and an “Adjunct Faculty Orientation” site accessible through Blackboard. Dr. Lemiesz has surveyed the more than 60 faculty members who attended Fall 2019 orientation sessions for their preferences for professional development opportunities. These programs, to be run in conjunction with the Center for Teaching and Learning, include a Community of Scholars and a brown bag lunch. With the advice of BCTC, she has developed an on-line orientation course to be run on Blackboard.

In her new role, Dr. Lemiesz will be the point person for many interactions between members of the adjunct faculty and the college. Many questions, especially about courses, can be answered best by departmental colleagues such as chairs, course coordinators, or department administrators; some issues call for information about resources available college-wide, especially those related to professional development and to “orientation” of various sorts. Dr. Lemiesz will be the administrator who either provides the latter or who directs a member of the adjunct to the person who can (and ensures that the connection is made).

Dr. Lemiesz received her B.A. from Smith College (English and Comparative Literature), her Masters and PhD (Comparative Literature) from Columbia University, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and her JD from New York Law School. She also holds a Certificate in Philanthropic Administration from the New York University, School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Before coming to Baruch, she was Dean of Students at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art from 1992-2013.
