Ethics Week, Presidential Excellence Awards, and the Abraham J. Briloff Prize
February 5, 2024
Ethics Week 2024 (March 18-24)
An annual event since 2004, Ethics Week at Baruch evolved from curricula in our three Schools that include emphases on ethical reasoning and/or decision-making. Generously supported by the Charles Dreifus Ethics-Across-the-Curriculum Initiative, the week typically features several components:
- classroom discussions led by instructors on issues related to their courses or disciplines;
- speakers invited to address classes;
- public workshops or presentations by invited guests; and
- announcement of the student and faculty winners of the annual Abraham J. Briloff Prizes in Ethics.
Please consider organizing some of your class time during Ethics Week around ethical issues as they relate to your subject or discipline—emphasis that falls naturally within our academic mission. We invite you to invite distinguished guests to speak that week—in your classes or in an event open to all. Modest stipends for speakers are available.
Please contact Associate Provost Dennis Slavin <dennis.slavin@baruch.cuny.edu> as soon as possible if you are interested in organizing an event and/or inviting a speaker.
Presidential Excellence Awards

Letters of nomination are welcome from any source within the Baruch community, including students, chairpersons, colleagues, staff members, deans, and departmental executive committees. Self-nominations will not be accepted. For more information, please visit the Presidential Excellence Awards page.
Nominations are due by Thursday, February 15. Nominations and questions should be addressed to Vanessa Cano, Special Assistant to the Associate Provost.
Abraham J. Briloff Prizes in Ethics
The Briloff Prizes in Ethics are intended to stimulate scholarship in the field of ethics, with an emphasis on ethics in professional life. Funded by a gift from alumnus Charles R. Dreifus (’66, MBA ’73), in honor of Abraham J. Briloff, Emmanuel Saxe Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Accountancy, the prizes are awarded annually to to a faculty member who has written an important topical article, essay, or book on ethics, and to a student (or students) who has written an outstanding research paper or essay (including for a class).
For the faculty prize ($1,500): Any faculty member may submit an article, essay, op-ed piece, website, or book (please submit only one chapter), unpublished or recently published.
For the student ($500): Any currently enrolled Baruch College student may submit an original essay or research paper. Work that was done for a course may be submitted. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Members of the faculty are encouraged to urge students or former students to submit their best work.
- Works must be topical and current; relevance is more important than length.
- All submitters must include a one-paragraph abstract that summarizes the main argument of the submission.
- The prize winners are selected by a committee of faculty from the Zicklin School of Business, the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Public Affairs.
Submissions are due by Friday, February 16. Submissions and questions should be addressed to Vanessa Cano, Special Assistant to the Associate Provost.
