Events next week and event listings in general

September 18, 2020

The weekly listing of upcoming events (now all online) from the provost’s office has returned (see below for the first). As mentioned in the header, to be included in the weekly list, information must be submitted using this form by noon of Wednesday of the previous week. Beginning next week, my office will curate and send such announcements weekly on Thursdays (or, less often, on Fridays or over the weekend), so send in your events by Wednesday!

To submit the event, you will need to provide the following:

  • the name and email address of the person submitting the information
  • the name of the event (e.g., title of talk, subject of debate)
  • the name(s) of the speaker(s)/performer(s)
  • the date, time (start and end), location
  • Zoom information (or other link); password if needed
  • an email or phone number (or both) for additional information

Also included is an optional section for a description of the event of 1,000 characters or fewer. This might include the name of the series to which the event belongs (e.g., International Business Seminar, Faculty Seminar, Silberman Concert Series), event sponsors, speaker biography, and/or a brief abstract of the event. If more space is needed, the information in its entirety should be posted on a website and the link should appear in the description in a format such as “For more information, see…”

  • Late submissions will not be posted.
  • Incomplete entries will not be posted.
  • As indicated above, the submission must be received by noon on Wednesday ofthe week prior to the event.
  • As in the past, previous listings may be retrieved from this archive of announcements.

Event Listings for the Week of September 21, 2020

Tuesday, September 22
11:00 AM-12:30 PM – CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING
Faculty Approaches to Vocat, presenters, Lauren Aydinliyim, Narendra Paul Loomba Department of Management, and Craig Stone, Center for Teaching and Learning
Vocat, Baruch’s multimedia uploading and assessment platform, has been used in many ways to facilitate distance learning. In this webinar, Prof. Aydinliyim of the Narendra Paul Loomba Department of Management will discuss how she has used Vocat both to distribute her own content and to accept student submissions. Craig Stone of the CTL will then demonstrate how to set up your course in Vocat for these uses. For more about this event and others, visit: https://blogs.baruch.cuny.edu/ctl/events/.

Kindly register in advance HERE.

12:15 PM-1:45 PM
DELTA Seminar: I am and I am not: Founders’ responses to the multiple meanings of ‘entrepreneur’, presenter, Heather Vough, George Mason University
Prof. Vough presents her paper, “I am and I am not: Founders’ responses to the multiple meanings of ‘entrepreneur.’” Abstract: While the term ‘entrepreneur’ is popular, due to its multiple possible meanings, both scholars and practitioners have struggled to define the term. In this study, we examine how this multiplicity of meanings and resultant ambiguity impacts entrepreneurs themselves. We use a grounded theory approach and draw on interviews with founders in Canada, the United States, and Australia to understand these implications. Presented by the Narendra Paul Loomba Department of Management. For the Zoom link and a copy of the working paper, email Prof. Lauren Aydinliyim.

Wednesday, September 23
12:30 PM-2:00 PM
Weissman Center International Business Seminar, presenter, Jei Bai, Harvard Kennedy School
Jei Bai, Assistant Professor of Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, will present a co-authored paper entitled, “Quid Pro Quo, Knowledge Spillover, and Industrial Quality Upgrading: Evidence from the Chinese Auto Industry.” Professor Bai’s research focuses on microeconomic issues of firms in developing countries and emerging markets. She received her Ph.D. in Economics from MIT and worked at Microsoft Research NE. 1:00 PM-2:00 PM – CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING
Transition to Distance Learning: Weekly Check-in
This weekly check-in session is an opportunity to connect with colleagues: to celebrate successes and collectively work through any challenges that may arise. For more about this event and others, visit: https://blogs.baruch.cuny.edu/ctl/events/.

Kindly register in advance HERE.

2:00 PM-3:30 PM – CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING
Tool Test Session
This session will allow you to test a tech tool for your online classes with other faculty members. Rather than a workshop with an “expert” facilitator who will explain uses of various tools, this is a space for participants to test something out together. Please note that we estimate the preparation before this session to involve between 30-60 minutes of work. Please visit https://blogs.baruch.cuny.edu/ctl/event/7137/ for more information.  ZOOM LINK:  https://baruch.zoom.us/j/93338948387
