The Information Systems and Statistics Research Seminar Series: Online deconvolution and demixing of calcium imaging data in real time, Dr. Eftychios A. Pnevmatikakis (Flatiron Institute)
Abstract: Optical imaging methods using calcium indicators are critical for monitoring the activity of large neuronal populations in vivo. Here we describe CaImAn, an open source suite of tools for online analysis of calcium imaging data, including i) motion artifact correction, ii) neuronal source extraction, and iii) activity denoising and deconvolution. Our approach combines and extends previous work on online dictionary learning and deconvolution, to deliver an automated pipeline that can discover and track the activity of thousands of cells in real time. We also discuss the problem of compressed sensing of fluorescence traces with underlying sparse neural activity and derive closed form expressions for its underlying phase transition curves. This event is sponsored by the Paul H. Chook Department of Information Systems and Statistics. For more information, email Prof. Rongning Wu.

Creating a Practical Dynamic and Innovation Approach to Business Ethics, Rabbi Gideon Pogrund and Marius Oosthuizen
Fraud, corruption, compromised institutional integrity, poverty, discrimination, social polarization, low trust levels, populist political agendas – all these issues beset different parts of the world. In South Africa, they are especially urgent, dramatic and intense. Failure to address them threatens the success of business and the country. In response to this challenge, in 2016 the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), Africa’s leading business school established the Ethics and Governance Think Tank, a ground-breaking initiative. The Think Tank’s purpose is to explore and influence how business can follow a more ethical approach, thereby building trust and helping to secure a more successful, sustainable future for the business community and the country. Gideon Pogrund and Marius Oosthuizen will discuss the aims and activities of the Think Tank, and share experiences and insights with global relevance. This event is sponsored by the The Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity. For more information click here.
