Invite the Writing Center to your class
January 19, 2021
From: Diana Hamilton, Director, Baruch College Writing Center
Dear members of the faculty:
The Writing Center invites you to request an online class visit or in-class workshop this spring. Each semester, we lead over 80 classroom visits and in-class workshops, introducing our services to students ranging from undergrads in CICs and honors business courses to grad students in management, fundraising, and psychology. We’ve adapted these services to Zoom to ensure we can continue to support your students. To learn more about our services, attend our faculty “Open House” on Tuesday, 2/2, from 1-1:30PM.
In a class visit: We’ll present a 10-15 minute overview that introduces our mission, describes our services, and helps students determine how they can make the best use of the Writing Center’s virtual resources. You can screen our pre-recorded video or request a Zoom visit by visiting our class visit request page.
In an in-class workshop: An experienced, professional Writing Center consultant will lead one of a range of workshops on writing, reading, and research skills:
- Analyzing Case Studies
- Analyzing Texts
- Controlling an Argument with Topic Sentences
- Cover Letters
- Developing Thesis Statements
- Emailing Strategically
- Evidence, Analysis, and Claims
- Focusing Research Topics
- Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Quoting
- Understanding Plagiarism and Citation
Our workshops typically last about 75 minutes, and you can find descriptions and lesson plans on our website. To ensure the success of the workshops, and to accommodate the high volume of requests, we require that participating faculty:
- Request in-class workshops at least two weeks prior to the desired workshop date(s), whenever possible,
- Be prepared to make the facilitator a Zoom host for the meeting so that they can share materials,
- Encourage students to participate actively in the workshop, and
- Be present for the entirety of the workshop.
You can use this link to submit a request.
Our student services: Please also encourage your students to visit the Writing Center this spring. You might include the following language on your syllabus:
The Writing Center offers free support to all Baruch students; you can meet with a professional writing consultant one-to-one (by video, audio, and text-based chat) and in small-group workshops. The Center’s consultants will work collaboratively with you to deepen your writing and English language skills. At any step in the process, they’ll help you become a more independent, confident, and versatile writer. You’re encouraged to schedule your appointment well in advance of when your writing is due. Visit their website, writingcenter.baruch.cuny.edu, to sign up for a session or workshop.
If you have any questions about workshops, class visits, or the Writing Center’s services, please contact the center’s director, Diana Hamilton, at diana.hamilton@baruch.cuny.edu, or consult our FAQs.
Thank you,
Diana
