Monday, May 23
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM – CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING
Summer Class Planning: Engagement Tools and Ideas with Zoom!, speaker, Catherine Kawalek, CTL

Engagement in summer classes is always top of mind when preparing your syllabus. Join us for a mini workshop to review ‘design thinking’ concepts with new Zoom options for both the online and classroom. We’ll discuss ways to increase participation, streamline your content delivery and actions for students to take for successful online classes. Bring your challenges to discuss with your peers and remember to upgrade your Zoom software prior to class. For more about this event and others, visit: https://blogs.baruch.cuny.edu/ctl/events/.

Tuesday, May 24
12:00 PM – 5:00 PM, NVC 14-266
CTL Writing Retreat I, speaker, Cheryl Smith, Department of English

The CTL Writing Retreat is back on in-person!  Full-time and part-time faculty, graduate students who teach, and staff are all welcome to join us!  The Center for Teaching and Learning will offer a two-day writing retreat for members of the Baruch community to focus on their research, writing, and creative work in a collegial environment, with opportunities to discuss writing strategies and writing support in the classroom. The CTL will provide a quiet space to write; coffee and snacks; opportunities to talk about writing and teaching strategies; and outlets for charging devices. Participants will get dedicated time over one or two days to work in a distraction-free environment. Jumpstart that new chapter, write that book proposal, or finish editing that article that has been languishing on your desktop. Give yourself the gift of time to write.

Contact Cheryl Smith at cheryl.smith@baruch.cuny.edu with any questions.

3:00 PM – 12:00 PM – CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING
Grade-in!, speakers, Hamad Sindhi and Tamara Gubernat, CTL

End-of-semester grading doesn’t have to be a solitary struggle! Join CTL staff for a synchronous online co-working session (on Zoom) and get some grading done in a quiet, communal virtual space. You are invited to provide your own drinks and snacks, and pets and other “coworkers” are welcome to make cameo appearances. For more about this event and others, visit: https://blogs.baruch.cuny.edu/ctl/events/.

12:30 PM – 2:00 PM
Marxe Talks: Title IX: Not Entitled IX, speakers, Jay Bergman (’59), Trustee of the Baruch College Fund and Sonia Jarvis, J.D., Distinguished Lecturer, Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs

1972 did not see adoption of the ERA, but it did see passage of Title IX of the Higher Education Act. On the 50th Anniversary of this historic legislation, we will be joined by Jay Berman ‘59 and Marxe School Professor Sonia Jarvis. Jay Berman, Indiana Senator Bayh’s Chief of Staff drafted the Title IX legislation. Two years later, Sonia Jarvis, Stanford women’s varsity basketball player visited the Athletic Director, weekly, asking for access to a regulation sized court, same as the men’s team. Mr. Berman and Professor Jarvis will be in conversation about the politics underlying the passage of Title IX; what it accomplished; and how much further we must go to ensure that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
