Recruiting co-leads for the First Year Seminar
July 16, 2020
From: Art King, Vice President & Dean of Students
I trust you and your loved ones are safe and well.
It’s that time of year again when I write to solicit your support with the First Year Seminar (FYS 1000). This fall, we anticipate approximately 2,150 incoming first-year students, who will be placed in the mandatory course. As such, I welcome your assistance in leading a section of FYS. You will be paired with a trained peer mentor.
As a reminder, FYS is designed to provide first-year students with tools necessary for their successful transition into Baruch College. The 75-minute, 10-week course, delivered online in synchronous format, exposes students to campus resources, academic success strategies, and time management skills; as well, students begin to explore preliminary career plans. In addition, FYS will explore a central thematic idea based on the assigned First-Year Text, The World According to Fannie Davis: My Mother’s Life in the Detroit Numbers written by Bridgett Davis. (An e-book copy of the text will be available to co-leaders.)
Even though classes officially begin on August 26, all first-year students will meet virtually on August 25 at 10:00am to participate in the annual Fall Student Convocation.
Each fall, I look forward to co-leading a section of FYS myself. Not only is it personally gratifying, but I get to help shape our new Bearcats for success at the College and beyond. Please consider co-leading a section of FYS and help make a difference in the lives of our first–year students!
