SACC needs your help with tutor recruitment!
January 2, 2020
Happy New Year!
Baruch’s tutoring center, dubbed the “Student Academic Consulting Center” (or SACC), employs many of our students as part of an award-winning peer tutoring program. Almost by definition, each semester sees substantial turnover among those who participate. A version of the recruitment message below, from SACC’s director Michele Doney, was sent in December to faculty teaching the courses that SACC supported through tutoring this past fall. A list of courses appears at https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/sacc/tutorial_service.htm#general.
It occurred to us that we might cast the net for new tutors more widely, given that a semester or two might have passed since some of our best students took the courses SACC supports. Please feel free to suggest the possibility of tutoring to your best students: learning to tutor (SACC provides extensive training) can be invaluable to students whatever their major is or their ultimate career choices might be.

I’m writing to ask for your help in recruiting our next group of new tutor hires. A robust pipeline of tutor applicants is absolutely essential to maintaining a top-notch tutoring program. That pipeline begins with you. Although SACC does reach out directly to qualified students, there is absolutely no recruitment strategy more powerful than a personal message to a student from their instructor. Some of the best tutors I have ever hired have been students who weren’t even thinking of becoming a tutor until an instructor urged them to do so. As the fall semester ends and you determine who is likely to make an A or A-minus in your course, I ask that you think about who your superstars are and take a moment to send them a personal email encouraging them to apply.
A special note to math instructors: We will need to hire a lot of math tutors for spring. Enrollment Management has advised us that the number of incoming students who need MTH 1023 is likely to double. It takes three tutors to support one section of MTH 1023, so we will need a robust pool of math applicants to meet this need.
The faculty recommendation form and tutor application form can be found here:
Completed faculty recommendation forms can be submitted on paper or electronically via email. If you prefer to email your recommendation to us, please send it from your Baruch faculty email account so we can be 100% sure of the sender.
The priority deadline for students wishing to be considered for Spring 2020 is Tuesday, January 14. Interviews begin January 17.
Please let me know if you have any questions. As always, thank you for your support of SACC and your assistance with the critical task of tutor recruitment.
