Services for Students with Disabilities

August 20, 2025

A link to this message was sent as part of the Provost’s Newsletter on August 20, 2025.

All students with and without disabilities should be reminded in each of their classes of Baruch College’s commitment to ensuring full access to all programs for all students,

Please convey this message early in the semester. This memo includes general information for faculty and a sample script that you may read aloud. Additionally, we are providing a brief statement that you may put on your syllabus and on your learning management (e.g., Blackboard) site.

General Information for Faculty Members

Baruch College’s Student Disability Services (SDS) will meet with any student who has identified as having a disability to determine the need for accommodations or academic adjustments. These accommodations will not conflict with academic standards and are determined on a case-by-case basis. The student may provide documentation of the disability to Student Disability Services which supports their accommodation request.  Students should inform their instructors of their accommodations by sharing their student Accommodation Card which has been issued by SDS. The card has the student’s photo, their first name, their EMPL ID, and their accommodations listed on it. Some students prefer an accommodation letter and should share that SDS letter with the instructor. If the student shares with you that they have a disability and have not requested accommodations through SDS, please refer them to Student Disability Services. If the professor or the department would like to make changes to the class format to make it more accessible (to everyone) Student Disability Services is available to provide guidance. Please note that students who are pregnant also are entitled to reasonable accommodations: https://www.cuny.edu/about/administration/offices/legal-affairs/policies-resources/reasonable-accommodations-and-academic-adjustments/v-accommodations/

Faculty who have questions about the reasonable accommodation process for students should consult with Lillian Shmulevich, Associate Director Student Disability Services. Call (646) 312-4590; email  Lillian.Shmulevich@baruch.cuny.edu or email disability.services@baruch.cuny.edu.

Any student who believes that they have been discriminated against based on a disability may file a complaint with diversity@baruch.cuny.edu.
