Two Personnel Announcements

May 1, 2015

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I am happy to announce two appointments:

Professor of Communication Studies Alison Griffiths has graciously agreed to serve as Interim Dean of the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences during the 2015-2016 academic year. Twice recipient of the Baruch College Presidential Award for Distinguished Scholarship, Professor Griffiths is an accomplished scholar and the author of the award-winning Wondrous Difference: Cinema, Anthropology, and Turn-of-the-Century Visual Culture (New York: Columbia University Press, 2003), which won the Sixteenth Annual Society for Cinema and Media Studies Dissertation Award in 1999; the Katherine S. Kovacs Award for the best published book in film and media studies in 2003; and honorable mention for the Krazna Krausz Moving Image Book Award in 2004. In Shivers Down Your Spine: Cinema, Museums, and the Immersive View (Columbia University Press, 2008) Griffiths developed new theories of immersive spectatorship tracing the phenomenon to planetariums, new media use in museums, and monumental buildings. Her forthcoming book, Carceral Fantasies: Cinema and the Prison in Early Twentieth Century America (Columbia University Press) examines how cinema and prisons came into contact in the early twentieth century and how film exhibition in prison served as a portal to the outside world. Dr. Griffiths’s interdisciplinary research has appeared in such journals as the Journal of Visual Culture, Cinema Journal, Screen, Film History, Wide Angle, Continuum, Visual Anthropology Review, Early Popular Visual Culture, Journal of Popular Film and Television, and in numerous anthologies on early cinema, media history, and media audiences. A member of the Doctoral Program in Theatre at the CUNY Graduate Center, Dr. Griffiths teaches in the Film Certificate Program, as well as in the Master’s Program in Corporate Communication and in the undergraduate Film Minor in Weissman. Professor Griffiths has been involved in program development, global education, and leadership at the School level, and is well positioned to lead our faculty during this period of transition and to advance the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences’ strategic plan and vision. Please join me in welcoming Alison Griffiths to her new role and in supporting her efforts to lead and serve our faculty and students.

Professor of Marketing Myung-Soo Lee will assume the role of Vice Provost for Global Strategies. Dr. Lee is an experienced scholar and teacher whose research contributes to our understanding of consumer information search and choice, forecasting value of purchasing intention measures, and the interaction between entrepreneurship and marketing. He most recently served with distinction as Interim Dean of the Zicklin School of Business, where he currently directs the international executive degree programs in Taiwan and Singapore. Professor Lee has also been active in the WC2 consortium of world colleges and universities in world cities; WC2 affiliation is one of Baruch’s tactics for globalization of our college. Dr. Lee earned an undergraduate degree from Chung-Ang University (Korea), an MBA from SUNY University at Albany, and a Ph.D. from SUNY University at Buffalo. Lee joined the Baruch faculty in Marketing and International Business in 1990. Please join me in offering your support to him in his new role.

With regards,

Dave Christy
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
