Subject: Writing Center Services for Faculty and Students
Dear members of the faculty:
The Writing Center invites you to request a class visit or in-class workshop this fall. Each semester, we visit more than 80 sections, introducing our services to students ranging from undergrads in CICs and honors business courses to grad students in management, fundraising, and psychology. All services are available both in-person and online this semester.
To learn more about our services, attend our online faculty open house:
- Online open house: Tuesday, 9/6, 1–1:30PM (by Zoom)
In a class visit: We’ll present a 10-15 minute overview that introduces our mission, describes our services, and helps students determine how they can make the best use of the Writing Center’s resources. Learn more on our class visit request page.
In an in-class workshop: An experienced, professional Writing Center consultant will lead one of a range of workshops on writing, reading, and research skills:
- Analyzing Case Studies
- Analyzing Texts
- Controlling an Argument with Topic Sentences
- Cover Letters
- Developing Thesis Statements
- Emailing Strategically
- Evidence, Analysis, and Claims
- Focusing Research Topics
- Peer review
- Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Quoting
- Understanding Plagiarism and Citation
- Using Sources Strategically
Our workshops run about 75 minutes, and you can find descriptions and lesson plans on our website. To ensure the success of the workshops, and to accommodate the high volume of requests, we ask that participating faculty:
- Request in-class workshops at least two weeks prior to the desired date
- Encourage students to participate actively, and
- Be present for the entirety of the workshop.
We have some gaps in our schedule this fall, so we may not be able to meet all workshop requests. That said, we are doing our best to find coverage! You can use this link to request a workshop.
Our student services: Please also encourage your students to visit the Writing Center for support on their papers. You might include the following language on your syllabus:
The Writing Center offers free support to all Baruch students. You can meet with a professional writing consultant one-to-one (in person or online—by video, audio, and text-based chat) and in group workshops. The Center’s consultants will work collaboratively with you to deepen your writing and English language skills. At any step in the process, they’ll help you become a more independent, confident, and versatile writer. You’re encouraged to schedule your appointment well in advance of when your writing is due. Visit their website, writing center.baruch.cuny.edu, to sign up.
If you have any questions about workshops, class visits, or the Writing Center’s services, please contact the center’s director, Diana Hamilton, at diana.hamilton@baruch.cuny.edu, or consult our FAQs.
Thank you,
Diana
